Dud Can

A can rejected for poor integrity or improper filling.

End (Lid)

The metal closure applied to the can body.

External Measurements

Measurements taken without destroying the seam (such as height, thickness). These can be measured with manual gauges such as the STH.

False Seam

A critical defect where the cover hook and the body hook do not interlock around the circumference of the can.

This can be caused by:

A damaged can flange,
Damaged or deformed ends,
incorrect seamer settings

Resulting in:

Clam shell (seam opening),
Product and gas leakage

Fill Height / Headspace

Distance between liquid level and top of can.

Filler

The machine that fills the can with product before it continues to the seamer.
